Windows

The bay is part of the building.

On a lot of houses — Victorian and Edwardian terraces especially — the bay window frame carries some of the load from the roof or the wall above it. Take the old frame out without supporting that load and the bay can drop. Before we quote a bay, we check how it is built: whether there is a structural pole or lintel, what is sitting on the frame, and the condition of the roof over it.

Where the frames are load-bearing, we fit bay poles or reinforcement within the new frames so the structure is carried properly. It is a small part of the price and the most important part of the job.

Bays are made to measure in uPVC or aluminium, in white, colours or woodgrain, to sit with the rest of the windows in the house.

Options

Bow or bay, and how it's built.

Bay windows

Three or more flat panes set at an angle and projecting from the wall — the most common shape on British houses.

Bow windows

A gentler curve made from four or more narrower panes. Suits older and cottage-style houses.

Box bays

Square-cornered bays, often found on Edwardian and interwar houses.

Structural support

Bay poles or reinforcement coupled into the frames wherever the bay carries load.

Roof & cill

We check the bay roof and cill at survey and tell you plainly if either needs attention before new frames go in.

Finish

White, anthracite, woodgrain or any colour to match the rest of the house.

Products & systems

Systems we install.

We are the installer. On bow & bay windows we survey for, supply and fit systems from REHAU, VEKA and The Residence Collection — the right one is confirmed for your opening at survey.

Questions

Bow & bay windows: your questions.

What is the difference between a bow and a bay window?

A bay is made of flat panes set at angles — usually three — so it has distinct corners. A bow uses more, narrower panes to form a gentle curve.

Will my bay need structural support?

Many do. If the existing frames are holding up the wall or roof above, the new ones need bay poles or reinforcement. We check this at survey and include it in the price.

Can I change my bay to anthracite grey?

Yes. Anthracite outside with white inside is one of the most popular changes we make.

Can you replace a bay without replacing the other windows?

Yes. We match the profile and finish as closely as possible so the bay sits well with the windows you are keeping.
