Aluminium glazing

One wide opening. Fitted to stay square.

A bifold is only as good as the opening it goes into. The panels run on a track that has to be level to within a millimetre or two across its whole length, and the structure above has to carry the load without deflecting. Get either wrong and the doors start to drag, catch or let water in within a couple of winters.

So we start with the opening, not the brochure. Carl measures the structural opening himself, checks the lintel or steel above it, and agrees the threshold detail with you before anything is ordered. On a new extension we would rather talk to your builder early, so the opening is formed to suit the door instead of the other way round.

The doors come from established aluminium systems — Origin and Cortizo — made to measure for your opening. We are the installer: we survey, specify, order and fit, and we are the people you ring if anything ever needs adjusting.

Options

Configured for your opening.

Panels & stacking

Two to seven panels, stacking to the left, the right or splitting both ways. An odd number gives you a traffic door — a single leaf you can use every day without folding the whole run.

Thresholds

A low threshold gives a near-flush step from kitchen floor to patio. Where the doors face the weather, a weathered threshold keeps water out. We will tell you honestly which your elevation needs.

Glazing

Double glazing as standard, triple where the room needs it. Toughened safety glass throughout, with solar-control glass for south-facing runs.

Colour & finish

Anthracite grey, black and white are the usual choices. Any RAL colour is available, and dual-colour frames let you have a different shade inside.

Hardware & locking

Multipoint locking on the traffic door, shoot bolts on the folding panels, and handles finished to match or contrast with the frame.

Bifold or slider?

Bifolds open the whole width. Sliders keep bigger panes and slimmer frames when shut. If you will mostly look through the doors rather than open them, a sliding door may be the better buy.

In detail

What we check before we order.

The structural opening
Width, height and square, measured at several points. Extension openings are rarely perfectly square, so we allow for it in the frame size rather than packing it out afterwards.
The lintel or steel
Bifolds are sensitive to deflection above them. If the head needs strengthening or the builder's steel needs a packing detail, we flag it at survey — not on fitting day.
Floor levels
Finished floor inside, patio level outside. The threshold is set to both, so they need agreeing early, especially on a new build where the floor is not down yet.
Drainage
Rain runs to the threshold. A slot drain or a fall away from the doors stops water standing against the cill.
Building Regulations
Thermal performance, safety glazing and ventilation are dealt with at survey, and confirmed in writing with your quotation.

Products & systems

Systems we install.

We are the installer. On aluminium bifold doors we survey for, supply and fit systems from Origin and Cortizo — the right one is confirmed for your opening at survey.

We recently had all the windows replaced at our home in Port Talbot by Carl Hancock, honestly couldn't be happier with the results. From the initial quote through to the final installation, Carl was professional, reliable and always happy to answer any of my questions or queries. The quality of the new uPVC windows are excellent — they have completely transformed the look of our home. If you're looking for a trusted fitter of uPVC windows, bifold doors or any style of double glazing, Carl is the man! Excellent workmanship, fair pricing and outstanding customer service from start to finish. A 5 star experience.

Questions

Bifold doors: your questions.

How wide can aluminium bifold doors go?

It depends on the system and the panel sizes, but a six- or seven-panel run across five to six metres is routine. The practical limit is usually the structure above the opening rather than the doors themselves. We confirm what your opening can take at survey.

Should I choose aluminium or uPVC bifolds?

Aluminium. uPVC bifolds exist, but the frames have to be much chunkier to stay rigid and wider runs are more prone to dropping over time. For anything over three panels we recommend aluminium.

Do I need planning permission for bifold doors?

Usually not, if you are replacing existing doors or windows on a house with something similar in appearance. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas are different, and forming a new or wider opening involves Building Regulations. We flag anything that needs checking at survey.

How long does fitting take?

Most bifold installations are fitted in a day, occasionally two where there is making good around a new opening. The doors are made to measure after survey, so there is a lead time before fitting — you get a realistic date with your quote.

Are aluminium bifold doors secure?

Good systems use multipoint locks on the traffic door, shoot bolts on the folding panels and internally beaded glass that cannot be removed from outside. We will talk you through the locking on the specific doors you choose.
